Named after a character in an old western movie, Shiloh remembers sitting beside her dad in the pick-up, a road-pop between his knees and a cigarette dangling from his mouth, as he drove the family from their Alberta ranch to their new homestead in British Columbia. Shiloh jumped out of the truck and onto a horse – riding through the glorious backcountry for what seemed like about five minutes, gulping in all fresh mountain air she could hold. Due to bar room antics and whiskey driven madness, the new ranch was soon history and Shiloh and her mother moved to a trailer park in town. At 14 she took a job as a waitress in a truck stop diner to pay to keep her horse at a local ranch. It didn’t work for long, so she soon developed another vice – songwriting. She stole her brother’s guitar and hit the road, moving from town to town looking for the next great drama. Vancouver stopped her in her tracks, stuck in a dead-end job with dreams as wide as a Western sky. Before long, producer John Ellis (Be Good Tanyas, Jeremy Fisher) spotted her at an open mike session and offered to produce her debut CD “For my Smoke,” a collection of songs combining images of the beauty, darkness and determination that have brought her this far. Shiloh’s gone as far west as she can without hitting deep water, but she’s not done yet. Not by a country mile.

Biography:

The piano in the parlor of her parents’ house in coastal Maine was hers as soon as she could reach its keys. On its bench, alongside her church-soprano mother, she learned the magic of harmony. In that same room, her older brothers’ records played, (Stones, Creedence, Beatles), and in the evenings, her school-teacher father’s collection of Glenn Miller and Sarah Vaughn. It was, Jude Johnstone recalls, “…all the education I thought I’d ever need.”

But she’d get more: writing songs by age ten, playing clubs while still in school, she surprised no one when, at nineteen, she headed west to continue her training in the studios and nightclubs of LA, where she soon found herself collaborating with many of that city’s top producers and musicians.
After her marriage (to writer/producer Charles Duncan), Johnstone rededicated herself to songwriting, setting off a string of covers by such artists as Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, Bette Midler, Trisha Yearwood, and Johnny Cash (including the title cut of the latter’s Grammy-winning album “Unchained”). She wrote, “The Women Before Me,” a #1 song on Radio & Records charts, which was recognized with a BMI Songwriter’s Award.

Johnstone’s critically acclaimed debut CD “Coming Of Age” (released on independent label BoJak Records) was featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” reached #6 on Amazon’s Best Seller’s List, and was the # 1 selling CD for the Burnside Distribution Corporation (BDC). Her most recent release “On A Good Day” spotlights eleven potent new songs, along with guest appearances by Jackson Browne, Rodney Crowell, Julie Miller, and Bonnie Raitt.

hard rockin’ modern country
North Of Mason Dixon, aka NOMaD. Geographically, this sextet can be traced there, but pinning them down musically and emotionally is a whole lot harder. All originally from working class areas of Western PA, the four core members Dave, Bobby, Brian, and Geo been writing, recording, and performing music together past the better part of a decade and a half. Truthfully, it’s not always been the hard rockin’ modern country music that you hear from them these days, but each step along the way has led emphatically to this point.

The beginnings of the North Of Mason Dixon sound can easily be traced to one particular summer. The band, still known by another name, was recording a more pop/rock oriented CD with Dave Hanner, of Corbin-Hanner fame, at Dave’s “Play On Recordings”. Dave had just gotten a song placed on Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” CD, and all parties involved started discussing the “modern country” sound, as it compared to the modern rock scene. Lead singer Dave August picks it up from there. “We were talking about how we, collectively, had listened to Garth, Vince Gill, Brooks & Dunn and countless others throughout our lives, and Hanner pointed out to us, very specifically, how our songs actually fit into that mold.” The band was intrigued by Hanner’s comments, and started to discuss it amongst themselves. “In rock ‘n roll, we were definitely coming from a more classic and melodic place than most modern bands were”, continues drummer Bobby Kunkel, “and we weren’t hearing that in the genre, hence realizing we were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The band had actually been writing modern country songs without even realizing it. Dave Hanner was wise enough to see that, and we thank him every day for it!”

The band became energized with this new discovery, and was liberated by being able to write and play their kind of music without having to mold it to fit in with the hordes of nu-rockers flooding the scene. Guitarist Geo Bennett explains it like this. “Not just musically, but in presentation and attitude as well, we are very much a band that conveys a good time, positive vibe. We absolutely love what we do, and have no problem showing that in our songs and shows. Having to put up an “angry young man” front just isn’t our thing, and now it is a non-issue. We are writing and performing music that is true to who we really are and enjoying it even more in the process.”

Who they really are turns out to be an exciting mix of familiar influences molded into a unique package that the band hopes will be the next step in the evolution of modern country music. “From KISS to The Eagles and Urban to Cash” jokes bassist Brian Osburn. “In all seriousness though, we all have numerous influences from various genres, but try very hard not to get too wrapped up in them.” That approach serves them well, as many of their songs feel very comfortable, even upon first listen; almost like you already have a history with them. The band attributes this to their near obsession with strong, accessible melodies. A bit of “pop songcraft” if you will. They’re not afraid to venture outside the box occasionally, but when they do it serves to compliment the song, not overwhelm it. The songs, as important as they are, are still only half of the equation.

The NOMaD live show is, as Yogi Berra might say, “the other 90 percent”. In keeping with their upbeat creed, the band purposely brings their irreverent and sometimes wild sense of humor to the stage along with their instruments. They feel that if someone is willing to spend hard earned money to come and see a show, then they deserve a party. The music is always at the center of it all, but these guys insist that the live experience be “elevated at least 7 or 8 notches above sitting on your sofa listening to the CD.” explains Bobby K. “We want our shows to be a celebration of all that’s good in life and for the two or three hours you spend with NOMaD, we want to make that the focus. If you enjoy the music enough to sing, dance, sweat, have a good time, and hopefully come back for more, then we’ve done what we set out to do.” And with the addition of John Waclo (rhythm guitar) and Cassandra Sotos (violin/fiddle) in the spring of 2004, the bar has yet been raised again. These two bring a new, even higher energy to an already overflowing level that exists. A chemistry has developed quickly to make this combination a winning one to take it to whatever level NOMaD desires.

The group knows that they might be facing an uphill climb to success. There are plenty of country music purists that will feel they push the envelope too much, and others that think it’s just impossible for anything with a fiddle or pedal steel in it to pack a punch. They just hope that preconceived notions like that don’t keep anyone from enjoying the band on any level. Whatever they do, they do it honestly and with passion. That much you can see, hear, and feel for yourself whenever you take a trip North Of Mason Dixon.

Daniel Laurent :: MASSterpiece 2.0

Daniel-Laurent-MASSterpiece

Daniel Laurent also known as DL made a name for himself on the New England Hip-Hop scene in early 2005 with his hit single “MASSterpiece (The Anthem)” (also called simply “The Cheers Song”) In the song, DL metaphorically travels Boston’s streets, subways, and popular nightspots with an ultimate tribute to his hometown. It was the lead single on J. Saki’s Best of the Bean Vol. 2 mixtape and it gained massive response during Wildboy’s Best of the Bean show on prominent radio station Hot 97.7FM. He garnered consistent rotation on commercial, college, and satellite radio stations, including Boston’s JAM’N 94.5, HOT 97.7, WERS 88.9 and WSBF 88.1 South Carolina, WNYU New York, and WRFG 89.3 Atlanta. It quickly became the single with the heaviest rotation by any local or national artist in WERS 88.9 history! He’s appeared on more than ten mixtapes and earned copious media praise.

Later that year, DL re-released his debut “Can’t Get A Break” with bonus tracks, exclusive remixes and a re-master of his hit “MASSterpiece (The Anthem).” From here, Self Made Entertainment emerged. The re-release sold very well regionally and even had international sales thanks in part with alliances with Australian radio alliances. Responding to public demand, Self Made Entertainment persuaded retail relationships in New England and Los Angeles to carry the record. Among a plethora of reviews, articles, and a prominent radio presence, DL won the 2005 Outstanding Achievement in Song Writing award from the Songwriters Resource Network for his smash single “Contagious.” His success landed him opportunities to open for national artists including Royce da 5’9, Devin tha Dude, and Joe Budden, to name a few.

DL later reinvented himself with “The Suppression”, released at the end of 2006 with a bonus DVD, offering conscientious, timeless tracks. Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, DL has lived in New York and South Carolina before returning home. He endured desperate times within his family: crime, incarcerations, drug addiction, lack of stability and the murder of his best friend and fiancée – all before the age of 18. Through it all, DL persevered through the written word.
Since releasing “STILL Can’t Get A Break: The Digital Epidemic”, an exclusive online album, he has also released 2 music videos, a plentiful amount of viral performances and interviews and appeared on more than a dozen other artists projects as well as maintaining a consistent college, commercial and satellite radio presence. DL is now working to release his best work to date and has gone back to the core with releasing “MASSterpiece 2.0”
